Japanese multinational IT equipment and services company Fujitsu Ltd has a teddy bear that has been transformed into a "social robot." The toy can read facial expressions; it is one of Fujitsu's milestones in the area of human-centric technology and machine interaction with human beings. "The teddy bear is meant for elderly patients in nursing homes and children in nurseries," said Fujitsu Malaysia president Charles Lew. "It can 'comprehend' the patients and children through face-to-face interaction, and monitors their emotional well being. "The data captured from the interactions is then uploaded into the Cloud and will trigger an alert to physicians or nursery staff if there are worrying changes."
